Keeping your home in good, working condition is important…this means taking the time to maintain your home properly throughout the year. We’ve put together a helpful fall season home maintenance checklist:

(1) Clean Your Gutters and Downspouts– Once most of the fall leaves have fallen from your trees, hire a professional to clean out your gutters and downspouts.

(2) Windows- Walk around the inside and outside of your home to check and make sure that your windows are sealed and caulked properly. For hard to reach windows, contact a professional window company to come out and inspect your windows (for safety purposes).

(3) Exterior Doors- Check to make sure your front and back door(s) are properly sealed and caulked.

(4) Check Safety Devices– Smoke detectors and carbon monoxide detectors should be tested at least once a year, and the batteries should be replaced as needed. Also, check the expiration date on your fire extinguisher(s), and replace them when they expire.

(5) Clean Out Your Dryer Vent– Your dryer vent builds up lint, which can make it work less efficiently and can even be a fire hazard for your home. The fall season months are a great time to clean out the lint that is built up in your dryer vent. You can either hire a duct cleaning specialist or clean your dryer vent out yourself. Read your dryer’s manufacturer’s manual for instructions and recommendations before you try this yourself.

(6) Pressure Wash Your Exterior– Hire a professional to pressure wash the exterior of your home in the fall season (if possible after the leaves have fallen off your trees).

(7) Deep Clean Your Kitchen– It is important to keep your kitchen working efficiently and looking great! Here are some deep-cleaning tasks in the kitchen you might want to tackle before the holiday season rolls around: clean your oven(s), vacuum your refrigerator coils, clean your small appliances, degrease the range hood and filter, scrub your tile grout, clean your lighting fixtures, wash the walls and backsplashes, wash/disinfect the garbage can and recycling bins in the kitchen and clean your garbage disposal.

(8) Clean Your Carpets and Rugs– If you have carpeting and rugs in your home, the fall season is a great time to have these items professionally cleaned, just in time for them to look great for the holiday season.

Just like your automobile, your home needs to be properly maintained. Regular maintenance will help increase your home’s value in the future. Not only will you keep your home safe and looking great, you will also save money in the long run on costly repairs.

Now is the perfect time to start working on your fall season home maintenance checklist!
